Texans for Alternatives to Pesticides is committed to educating the public about the serious health effects of toxic chemicals currently being sprayed on cities and schools; and assisting those government and private agencies in implementing a plan to reduce and eventually eliminate pesticides from our environment by using viable alternatives.

Started in Houston to alert the community regarding the continuous spraying throughout the year of toxic chemicals (herbicides) for the control of weeds by Houston Public Works and Parks Depts., Harris County Flood Control and all the Independent School Districts.  All the agencies are required to keep records and can be accessed through the open records process.  Chemicals used daily include Plateau, Roundup, Surflan, Pendulum, Rodeo, MSMA, Endurance, Simanex, Vanquish, amongst others.

These chemicals are sprayed on right-of-ways, esplanades, golf courses, ball fields, playgrounds and sidewalks.  The spraying program has increased almost 100% over the last two years.    Many of the chemicals are mixed together to control different types of weeds.  If you would like further information please contact at the address above.

This new organization recently co-hosted, with Consumer's Union, Texas Clean Water, and Texas Center for Policy Studies, a statewide conference "New Perspectives on Pesticides".  We have developed a product that offers customers an alternative to pesticides when dealing with bugs, weeds, etc. in a glue-free boxed recipe card file format.

The recipe card file and box, cardboard folded without any glue, consists of six sections: Bugs, Weeds, Materials, Habitat, Resources, and Sponsors.

BUGS comments on the prevention and treatment and suggests alternatives ways of dealing with them  Included are chinch bugs, cockroaches, fire ants, fleas (indoor and outdoor), mosquitos, snails and slugs, termites, webworms and caterpillars.

WEEDS cards state “ a weed by any other name”........and “don’t kill the messenger - the detectives”,  and continues with cards on alternatives for grassburs, bermuda grass, poison ivy, nut grass and many others.

MATERIALS offers an assortment of alternative materials such as BT, baking soda, beneficial nematodes, boric acid, cedar, citrus oil, compost tea, D.E., garlic sprays, Garrett juice etc.

HABITAT offers information on how to manage your garden and home: attracting beneficials, creating healthy soil, creating biodiversity and water gardens.

RESOURCES  directs people to books, magazines and newsletters, websites that further the mission to eliminate poisons from our environment.

Currently the product is being sold in nurseries, the Houston Arboretum and the Natural Science Museum.

The box sells for $10 wholesale and $20 retail.
